Discover Detroit’s Vibrant Art Scene with The Cultivist

25 Apr 2024 Discover Detroit’s Vibrant Art Scene with The Cultivist

Coming up in June, our Club members will spend 3 days exploring Detroit's rich art scene which is famed for its bold murals, provocative installations, and dynamic graffiti. With a strong community of Black artists, Detroit's public spaces have become a canvas for social and political messages, community celebrations, and aesthetic delights. The creative landscape has seen a surge in recent years as economic challenges presented opportunities for artists to repurpose and revitalise abandoned areas such as the Grand River Creative Corridor. The cultural hub of Detroit was a clear destination choice and we’ve put together an art-filled itinerary, ensuring that the city’s every cultural highlight is included for our members!

We’ll be staying at the Shinola Hotel located in downtown Detroit, an area renowned for its waterfront sculptures and in particular the Fist, an iconic monument to the Detroit boxer and civil rights activist Joe Louis. The luxury hotel was chosen for its prime location and fantastic contemporary art collection in the vibrant Living Room, which doubles as a gallery space for guests to enjoy. Curated by the gallery Library Street Collective, the collection includes works by renowned local female artists including Tiff Massey, Margo Wolowiec, and Beverly Fishman.

The trip promises to be filled with art from start-to-finish as we explore Detroit's renowned museums including the national historic landmark of Cranbrook Art Museum and MOCAD. Top of our list is the Detroit Institute of Arts where we will marvel at Diego Rivera's masterpiece, the Detroit Industry Murals. These vivid frescoes intertwine technology and humanity, capturing the city's industrial prowess and creating a timeless reflection on labour, innovation, and society. Our pit-stop at Lafayette Park, a modernist residential district designed by architect Mies Van der Rohe will showcase sleek high-rises and townhouses nestled amidst greenery. Another trip highlight will be The Heidelberg Project, an iconic outdoor art installation by Tyree Guyton, offering a social commentary on poverty, waste, and the transformative power of art and creativity in urban communities.

No Cultivist-arranged journey is complete without an exclusive dive into the art world. Our members will partake in intimate studio visits with established Detroit artists like LaKela Brown, Michael Angelo Harrison, Scott Reeder, and James Benjamin Franklin, gaining insights into their creative processes and narratives. Additionally, they'll have the unique privilege of exploring Marcie Orley's private art collection, led by Marcie herself, providing an enriching experience filled with cocktails, conversation, and art appreciation.

Detroit promises to be a fantastic art adventure and a key moment in our 2024 programme! Find out more about Club-Level Membership to open doors to exclusive experiences connecting you with the art world's most intriguing destinations and events. Inquire about your membership here.
